The Curse of Strahd adventure module for Dungeons & Dragons doesn’t give much background information for most of its NPC allies, otherwise known as “Strahd’s Enemy”. In Curse of Strahd, these allies are fated to assist you in your goal of destroying Strahd von Zarovich. This supplement fills in the gaps left by Curse of Strahd by providing extended information on each ally, including their motivations, gaining their trust, pros and cons of travelling with them, and more!

Although it is not as essential as Raising the Stakes, I strongly recommend reading this product when you decide to run Curse of Strahd (and you really really should). It will give you a much needed insight in NPC’s motivations and personalities and will make them alive on whole new level – a crucial component if you want to use described allies in a meaningful way and if you want your players to experience them as real, relevant persons. It will also make your job as DM a lot easier since you will have more than enough info on how to role play the CoS allies.

This compendium is SO helpful, in a major way I did not anticipate: as my players advance through the campaign, it has already been amazing to have a coherent, fleshed out description of ALL of the companions for an immediate role-play reference, even if they are not involved in the players’ fortunes. Piddlewick II doesn’t feature in their fates, so in all honesty I didn’t give him (it? them?) any prep time. So when they bumped into him during an unexpected few turns in the castle, I was able to grab Lights in the Darkness and boom- instant, consistent, coherent motivations and reactions. I’m keeping this handy from here on out. Well done as always, LBH!

Really helpful and enlightening, most of all for those characters not so fleshed out in the official module. Can really be a game changer when you begin to think about these NPCs as potential allies for the party! May not be as useful as “Raising the Stakes” (that’s why I give it 4 stars and not 5), but it’s a damn good book.

This is a very handy resource, with a lot of useful information gathered into one place about the large potential cast of characters in CoS. Greatly expanded from the relatively sparse info in the published adventure, it contains lots of great jumping-off points for your own inspiration!
